Overview

The Mildred Huff Lending Library provides early childhood teachers and students access to an inspiring collection of age-appropriate books. Children check out books to read at home, encouraging quality time spent with parents; teachers benefit from the Lending Library by having a new in-classroom source of outstanding books to supplement their lessons and activities.

The Lending Library makes reading irresistible to young children by offering dozens of wonderful, high quality books for them to read. It provides a fun and beneficial activity that students and parents can enjoy together; and, by checking out books, being responsible for their care and returning them to school, children get an early introduction to this concept and feel more invested in both the books and in reading. (It also may inspire families to visit their own neighborhood library!)

Every book in the Lending Library is thoughtfully chosen by Leap Learning Systems’ staff for its quality vocabulary and themes. An activity sheet created by Leap staff accompanies each book and further enhances the reading experience between child and parent, prompting conversation about characters, illustrations, and new words and concepts.

This program is a tremendous asset to schools and communities where the Lending Library is present. Serving the young children who benefit from having access to these books and reading activities, the Lending Library consistently has shown to stimulate a greater interest in reading among the preschoolers and parents who take advantage of the program.

How It Works

Any classroom that receives early childhood programming from Leap Learning Systems is eligible for a complimentary Lending Library for the duration of the program, though it also may be purchased. Leap maintains multiple versions of four sets of libraries for disbursement. Each Lending Library contains 40 high-quality, multi-cultural books and activity sheets. In preschool classrooms, the Lending Library can effectively complement Leap Learning Systems’ Preschool Curriculum: Building Language Through the Year.
