Language Through Science

Overview

Language Through Science (LTS) is a professional development program for early childhood teachers. Through small-group trainings and a lesson plan of activities, teachers learn how to use science instruction to improve their students’ pre-literacy and language skills.

When you're four years old, the best science lesson is active involvement with the world around you. Young children's natural curiosity lends itself to science, which makes this subject a great springboard for building language and pre-literacy skills while exploring scientific concepts like counting, classifying, and measuring.

Why is a science program important in the early childhood classroom?

  • Students should be able to talk about experiences they have had, not only experiences they have read about
  • Students should be able to remember and use better vocabulary to map them to their own discoveries
  • Science activities let teachers use language in a unique way to help students better understand new concepts
  • Science encourages continuous exploration in and outside of the classroom!

How It Works

LTS puts teachers at ease by providing a straightforward lesson plan and guiding them through how to implement Leap’s proven Language Techniques.

Students will establish a basic understanding of the scientific process by engaging in hands-on activities related to themes such as color, water, construction and weather. Extension book reading and interactive lessons reinforce learning and excitement that students will carry with them beyond the classroom.
