Illinois Starnet Region V- Presents Leap Learning Systems Language and Literacy Development Workshops

Drs. John Lybolt and Kate Gottfred will be presenting two workshops on September 3, 2010 and on September 24, 2010.

Workshop descriptions:

September 3, 2010

Literacy Development in young children: Phonemic Awareness

Phonemic awareness skills are fundamental in reading development. While these skills (awareness of sounds in words, rhyming, knowing the sounds of your language) begin to develop from the first year, children may need teachers or intervention specialists to provide specific classroom or individual programming to support these skills.

September 24, 2010

Play: Building Blocks for Literacy

Play skills emerge shortly after birth and continue to increase in complexity through early childhood. Play reflects increasing symbolic activity, receptive and expressive language skills and social-emotional growth. We will explore how each of these skills eventually support emergent literacy, and how they can be stimulated and supported by parents or professionals. During this presentation, we will learn about the neurological correlates of symbolic cognitive and social behaviors.
